Custody disputes can get pretty ugly. What’s bad about some of them is the idea that people with more resources can often get their way in these matters even if they are clearly the bad choice when it comes which parent for the child to go to.
Muslim law, Sharia, can be quite extreme.
This is especially true when you consider the difference in how the laws treat men and women.
When a Muslim judge can take away a child over a woman wearing a bikini, well, I think we have a real problem.
It Happened
It may sound outrageous, but that is what happened to a woman called Bethany Vierra.
Vierra moved from the United States to Saudi Arabia to stay with her husband, who is a Muslim businessman.
The couple had a child, a daughter, but they would end up getting divorced after a few years as Vierra realized this type of marriage and the local laws were not for her.
As they were fighting for custody, it seemed that Vierra had a great case to win custody.
After all, there were pictures of the father doing drugs right in front of the daughter.
A different picture changed the outcome, however.
The husband produced a picture of Vierra in a bikini.
In other pictures, she was also wearing clothing that is forbidden under Sharia.
Under Sharia, the man is always given the benefit of the doubt, so the daughter was handed over to a junkie.
Vierra stated, “It’s videos versus male witnesses.
“They wouldn’t in some cases even look at the evidence that I had.
“It was just completely disregarded because he ‘swore to God.’ It’s all been infuriating.”
She later added, “This is not just my story — there’s much worse.
“It’s hard to believe stuff like this can happen.”
It does, and yet people keep sticking up for local communities in this country that are allowing Sharia.
