Amid a massive controversy, Anthony Rota, Canada’s Speaker of the House of Commons, has resigned. During an address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the Canadian Parliament, Rota was seen leading a standing ovation for a former Nazi soldier, which sparked worldwide outrage.
This scandal is especially concerning considering Canada’s continued financial and military assistance to Ukraine, which exceeds $9 billion.

In light of this incident, Rota offered an apology and expressed gratitude to Holocaust survivors and war veterans. He said that he would provide more information about how the Nazi soldier came to be honored at a later date.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough for Poland’s Minister of Education and Science Przemysław Czarnek who has since initiated proceedings to determine the possibility of extraditing Yaroslav Hunka. Czarnek took to social media voicing his concerns about honoring someone with such a dark past in a chamber full of individuals who are representing freedom from oppressive regimes like Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine.
Outcry from Jewish advocacy groups came swiftly after the initial applause; they denounced the Parliament’s endorsement of Hunka as a hero. These groups argued that honoring war criminals should never be tolerated no matter what their age or background may be as these acts only serve to further propagate hate crimes rather than promote justice and equality throughout society.

This incident serves as yet another reminder that certain members within the government have not learned from history nor taken adequate steps towards ensuring similar events do not occur in future political climates both domestically and internationally.
The world must take responsibility for ensuring inhumane practices like those associated with Nazism are never accepted or rewarded regardless if it happens on accident or intentionally.
The consequences for such action must always remain severe so we can protect those who were wrongfully persecuted in past eras while also protecting those innocent people who could fall victim should such practices become normalized once again due to lackadaisical attitudes or wrongful recognition for bad behavior.
