An unnamed staffer working for Senator Rand Paul suffered “life-threatening” injuries in a stabbing attack “on a busy commercial street in Northeast Washington.” It appears to be “random.” Breaking updates list the name of the staffer as Phillip Todd.

Life threatening injuries

The injuries suffered by Rand Paul’s staff member on Saturday, March 25, were reported to be “life threatening.” He was brutally stabbed by “a man released from prison a day earlier.

As of Tuesday, the victim “was considered stable while awaiting surgery to address a punctured lung and potential internal and brain bleeding.” Despite the victim’s status politically, the attack appears to be random.

This is one of those fast moving stories where the information comes in drips. What we know so far is that the male staffer works for Senator Paul on the Senate Homeland Security Committee. He hasn’t spoken to reporters due to his injuries but was able to provide a statement to police.

The day of the assault, police arrested 42-year-old Glynn Neal of Southeast Washington and charged him with assault with intent to kill. The Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator confirms he was “released from prison a day before the attack.

Police reports indicate that the vicious stabbing happened around 5:15 p.m. in the 1300 block of H Street NE “after the staffer and his friend left a nearby restaurant.

While being treated for his serious injuries he managed to inform police at the hospital “that he did not know the man who stabbed him or why he was attacked.

Senator issues statement

On Monday, Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul issued a statement declaring: “This past weekend a member of my staff was brutally attacked in broad daylight in Washington, D.C. I ask you to join Kelley and me in praying for a speedy and complete recovery, and thanking the first responders, hospital staff, and police for their diligent actions.

His injuries are considered “stable” pending surgery but it will be a long time before he’s out of the woods.

The knife wielding barbarian was “convicted in 2011 of pandering, making threats to kidnap and other charges.” Too lazy to work for a living, “prosecutors alleged he asked a woman with whom he was romantically involved to ‘make some money by prostituting herself to strangers.

What got him in trouble was assaulting her “when she declined his advances, according to charging documents.” He got “more than 12 years behind bars, with five subsequent years of supervised release.” Apparently he wasn’t supervised properly. The injuries suffered by the staffer should keep him back in his cage for another good stretch.

Police didn’t have a hard time tracking down the attacker, thanks to modern cell phone technology. Police “police identified Neal as the alleged attacker by using a cellphone found at the scene and calling a woman who turned out to be Neal’s sister.

Once they had him in custody and unable to do serious injuries to anyone else, Neal told detectives “a voice was telling him that someone was going to get him for all the things he done. So [Neal] was waiting right there to get the someone.” Senator Paul’s staffer simply turned up at the wrong place at the wrong time. Ironically, “the attack came four days before the House Oversight Committee is set to hold a hearing on crime and public safety in the nation’s capital, which is expected to focus broadly on D.C.’s approach to reducing violent crime.
