Joe Biden has finally gotten something a little stiff in that backbone of his.
The United States, finally, has started to evacuate Americans from Sudan.
With an estimated 16,000 Americans in Sudan, the administration, to this point, was leaving them on their own.
So Biden is clearly caving to pressure not to leave Americans behind enemy lines… again.
Get Them Out
When the violence started to get out of control in Sudan, Biden ordered our embassy evacuated.
They sent a SEAL team in to do a helicopter extraction.
For regular American citizens, however, they were offering nothing more than directions to border crossing areas.
Not only that, Blinken was trying to say that of the 16,000 Americans in country, only about a dozen expressed interest in leaving.
He said that while videos and pictures of Americans being evacuated by other countries were blowing up the internet.
Then, on Saturday, reports stated that a convoy had arrived to take Americans out of the country.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller explained, “We continue to assist U.S. citizens and others who are eligible with onward travel to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where additional U.S. personnel are positioned to assist with consular and emergency services.”
Continue was a generous word because they had done nothing substantial to that point.
Even though Blinken put the number at a dozen, Miller stated that it was “fewer than 5,000” Americans that had requested help getting out.
The State Department responded, “The U.S. government has taken extensive efforts to contact U.S. citizens in Sudan and enable the departure of those who wished to leave.
“We messaged every U.S. citizen in Sudan who communicated with us during the crisis and provided specific instructions about joining this convoy to those who were interested in departing via the land route.
“We encourage U.S. citizens who want to leave Sudan but chose not to participate in this convoy to contact the Department of State using the crisis intake form on our website.”
I would suggest that some Americans may have decided to take matters into their own hands rather than being left behind by the administration as happened in Afghanistan.
So far, there have been two Americans killed in Sudan as this violence continues.
