As Canada enters its worst fire season since 1990, residents in the Northwest Territories are being forced to evacuate their homes due to 200 wildfires raging in the region. The Canadian Armed Forces have been deployed, and airlifting efforts are underway as people flee to safety.

Premier Caroline Cochrane said in a statement: “We’re all tired of the word unprecedented, yet there is no other way to describe this situation in the Northwest Territories.” So far this year, over 101,800 square kilometers of land have burned across Canada due to forest fires, with thick smoke traveling into major cities and triggering dangerous-air-quality warnings.
The evacuation flights should only be used as a last resort for those who do not have any other options available for leaving the area. Officials are encouraging people to leave by car and carpool if possible in order to reduce traffic congestion on roads.

British Columbia is facing similar issues with out-of-control fires intensifying further on Saturday and doubling the number of people under an evacuation order from one day earlier. Premier Daniel Eby declared a state of emergency on Friday which gave temporary authoritative powers that can be used to tackle fire risks. 35,000 people were under evacuation orders while another 30,000 were under evacuation alert at the time of writing this article.
Eby also ordered a ban on non-essential travel so that more temporary accommodation could be made available for evacuees and firefighters alike – he remarked that “the current situation is grim”.
With strong winds and dry lightning causing existing forest fires to intensify and ignite new ones, authorities warned of difficult days ahead – particularly around Kelowna where an out-of-control fire had already destroyed several structures with 2,400 properties evacuated from the area by Friday evening.

The fires have drained local resources with federal government assistance required alongside support from 13 countries – four firefighters have tragically died in these blazes so far this summer alone. About 140,000 square km (54,054 square miles) of land has already been burnt down; an area roughly equivalent in size to New York State!
This is set against the backdrop of widespread drought-like conditions throughout much of Canada which could see this fire season stretch right into autumn; something we must all work together hard to prevent!
