Border Security Crisis: Why Republicans Are Sounding The Alarm Now More Than Ever

The recent Hamas terror attack against Israel has only highlighted the significant security concerns along America’s border. Republican leaders are speaking out in defense of their nation, emphasizing how dangerous it is to leave our borders unsecured during a historic migrant crisis that has left Border Patrol agents overwhelmed.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was particularly vocal on the issue, pointing out how there have been border encounters with migrants from Iran, Russia, China, and even the Middle East. “That is not good for the security of this country,” he said on CNN.

Fox News reported this week that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has encountered thousands of “special interest aliens” since 2021; these are people from countries identified by the U.S. government as having conditions that promote or protect terrorism or potentially pose some national security threat to America. In FY 2023 alone, there were 154 encounters at northern and southern borders among ports of entry – more than six years combined – while 505 were encountered at ports of entry.

These watchlist hits mean people were stopped, but it doesn’t guarantee they are terrorists; family members and associates can also be included on such lists. Still, House Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green asserted, “Open borders is the biggest national security threat we face today.” At the same time, Senator Ted Cruz said, “The risk of a serious terrorist attack in the United States is right now greater than it has been any time since September 11th.”

Former acting CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan agreed: “This attack should serve as a ‘wake-up call‘ to pay attention to the alarms we have been sounding for a while” regarding border security being synonymous with national security. Additionally, Kelly and Zinke introduced a resolution recognizing the “influx of known or suspected terrorists through America’s northern border as a threat to national security.”

Given all this evidence, Republicans need no further convincing about why our borders must remain secure: safety first! To ensure our nation stays safe from those who would do us harm, we must act now before it’s too late!
