There is a little something brewing in Florida and I believe it is the work of Donald Trump trying to destroy Governor DeSantis.
A big topic of debate has been the black history curriculum that Florida is using.
Last week, Kamala Harris attacked DeSantis on this front.
Now, a Trump ally, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), is doing the same, and DeSantis took exception.
One Line
Harris grabbed one line from the guidelines to make it sound like slavery was beneficial to black people.
DeSantis explained, “[They were] trying to say that because they had a provision saying that there were slaves that developed skills, even though they said that was in spite of slavery, not because of slavery, that somehow that was whitewashing it when these are people who’ve been studying this, and they were very honest with everything and many of them themselves are African American.”
So, to clarify, let’s say a slave was being used as a blacksmith, then earned his freedom, would that former slave not then have a viable trade to pursue his own business interests?
That, at least, is my take on this. It is a far stretch from saying that slavery was a good thing for black people.
And oh, by the way, Kamala Harris used to support a curriculum that took this approach, but now she has reversed to create some turmoil.
The line in question, one of 191 lines, stated, “Instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”
During a recent interview, Donalds stated that “the attempt to feature the personal benefits of slavery is wrong & needs to be adjusted.”
He added that the rest of the standards are “good, robust and accurate.”
DeSantis took extreme exception, stating, “So at the end of the day, you got to choose.
“Are you going to side with Kamala Harris and liberal media outlets? Are you going to side with the state of Florida?
“I think it’s very clear that these guys did a good job on those standards. It wasn’t anything that was politically motivated. These are serious scholars.
“So don’t side with Kamala on that, stand up for your state.”
Make no mistake about it, this is an attack on behalf of Trump by Donalds.
It is a brilliant move by Trump, sending a minority member of the GOP caucus into attack DeSantis on a very high-profile minority issue.
It gives the impression that DeSantis is a racist, which will help Trump win the minority vote.
It is dirty, but it will be very effective.
