On December 9th, a staff member from the House Chief Administrative Office was arrested by the U.S. Capitol Police while trying to clear security at a congressional office building.
Jeffrey Allsbrooks was arrested after he brought a handgun into a congressional office building. When the Capitol Police caught up to him, he claimed that he forgot the gun was in his bag. He is now being charged with carrying the gun without a license.
Allsbrooks is a staff member in the House Chief Administrative Office, which is a nonpartisan outfit that provides “support services and business solutions” to offices in the House of Representatives.
A security alert was sent out by the Capitol Police just before 8 a.m. telling staffers to take security precautions.
Many people are concerned after finding out that the Capitol Police were not immediately alerted to the handgun entering the building. According to the Capitol Police, the officers didn’t see the image of the gun on their x-ray screen until after Allsbrooks had left the screening area.
Police officers had to look for Allsbrooks, catching up with him four minutes later and arresting him, according to the Capitol Police, who are now “looking into what happened before, during and after those four minutes.”
A reporter for NBC4 News wrote on Twitter that Allsbrooks has chosen to plead not guilty to the charges.
“Jeff Allsbrooks of Richmond (Va), an employee of House Chief Admin. Office, has pleaded NOT GUILTY to possession of unregistered firearm/ammo He’s accused of bringing loaded gun thru security at Longworth US House Office Bldg. Release conditions prohibit gun possession,” reporter Scott MacFarlane tweeted.
