The last pro-life Democrat in the House of Representatives may be losing his seat in the very near future to a 28 year old “Squad”-backed candidate.
Apparently, there are hardly any Democrats left that believe an unborn baby deserves to live. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) failed to receive a majority of the vote in the primary on Tuesday, March 1st, and will now head to a runoff election against Jessica Cisneros, a radical leftist immigration attorney. Cuellar received only 48 percent of the vote, while Cisneros received 47 percent.
Cisneros challenged Cuellar back in 2020 and lost to him by less than 3,000 votes.
As a pro-life Democrat, Cuellar was the only Democrat in the House to vote against the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would have codified Roe v. Wade and repealed all abortion restrictions nationwide. It passed in the House by a slim margin, but failed in the Senate.
Cisneros has criticized Cuellar’s pro-life stance and made it clear that she unapologetically supports unrestricted abortion access. Surprisingly, despite her criticism for him, Cisneros interned for Cuellar in 2014.
The radical leftist candidate is unsurprisingly endorsed by both Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), as well as other progressive lawmakers.
Cuellar has represented Texas’s 28th Congressional District since 2005 and has gained a reputation for his moderate to conservative stances on issues such as abortion, guns, and border security. Cuellar has criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the southern border, which includes parts of his district.
Abortion and border security have emerged as key issues in the Hispanic community in Texas, which has come as a surprise for some Democrats. The abortion issue should be obvious, as Hispanics are a largely Catholic group. The border security issue is important because it has led to overcrowding in schools and hospitals, and has led to increased crime in communities along the border.
