After this waiter finished serving these two customers, he cleaned up the table and went to grab the receipt. To his shock, he saw they wrote a big “zero” on the tip line before noticing their horrible 5-word explanation why.
Nathan Bergeron, a young man working in Memphis, Tennessee at a popular Mexican restaurant chain was the victim of racism recently.
Nathan is known for being a hard worker according to his friends. He takes pride in offering good service, knowing that tips are necessary for him to reach his goals. As he served all customers with kindness, one customer showed no regard for his efforts and wrote “We don’t tip white ppl LOL” on the receipt after they were done dining.
This incident not only insulted Nathan but it also added insult to injury because he was homeless and had been working 50-60 hours a week trying to save money for an apartment. After coming back from the table where this couple had been sitting, Nathan found the receipt with these hurtful words written on it.
This was the first time Nathan had ever experienced something like this based on race alone since he typically received rude comments about getting a “real job”. Despite this awful experience, Nathan has taken it all in stride as best as possible by brushing it off saying “you win some, you lose some”.
After sending the receipt to one of his friends, she posted it on Facebook which sparked many comments both condemning and trying to help Nathan financially. In essence this post went viral which resulted in over $8,000 being raised via GoFundMe for Nathan who desperately needed assistance getting into an apartment of his own.
Unfortunately there were also skeptics who claimed that this was just another hoax which left Nathan feeling disheartened despite everyone’s efforts to show their support in light of this situation.
Although it would have been understandable if Nathan responded differently due to what happened; he chose not to meet hate with more hate but instead wants people regardless of race or occupation to be treated with respect when they are doing their jobs well.
