Democrats are trying to put pressure on Justice Clarence Thomas.
This outrage they are expressing is a complete charade, however, because Thomas never violated any existing ethics laws.
Even so, Democrats requested that Chief Justice Roberts sit down for a hearing for his input on the matter, but he just told them to go pound sand.
Not Happening
The outrage is over Thomas going on vacations with a buddy who also happens to be a megadonor for the Republican Party.
Now, I have already stated that optically, this is not a good look for Thomas.
At the same time, he broke no rules, so this is all political theater, which is pretty much what Roberts told Democrats.
Senator Durbin (D-IL) had penned Roberts a letter extending an invitation to sit down with them regarding ethics rules for the Supreme Court.
Roberts responded, “I must respectfully decline your invitation.
He cited the “exceedingly rare” circumstances a Chief Justice of the United States would testify before Congress, “as one might expect in light of separation of powers concerns and the importance of preserving judicial independence.”
Roberts also provided Durbin with the code of conduct the Supreme Court currently uses.
Durbin sounded like someone knocked his ice cream out of hand, stating, “I am surprised that the Chief Justice’s recounting of existing legal standards of ethics suggests current law is adequate and ignores the obvious.
“The actions of one Justice, including trips on yachts and private jets, were not reported to the public. That same Justice failed to disclose the sale of properties he partly owned to a party with interests before the Supreme Court.
“It is time for Congress to accept its responsibility to establish an enforceable code of ethics for the Supreme Court, the only agency of our government without it.”
