Woah, wait what’s going on here? In a very shocking turn of events, Pennsylvania’s own John Fetterman just made a very excellent point while delivering a speech on Wednesday, September 27.
In his speech, Fetterman drew bipartisan praise from American citizens on the issue of China’s ownership of US farmland. His comments have highlighted the unease felt by many over the Biden administration’s relationship with China and its potential influence in our agricultural sector.
Fetterman began his speech by referring to data which pointed to the 2013 acquisition of Virginia-based pork producer Smithfield Foods by China’s Shuanghui International Holdings Limited as one example of foreign government control over American farmland.
This $4.7 billion dollar deal is still considered to be the largest purchase made by a Chinese company in America, leading Fetterman to ask “Why exactly would the Chinese want to own vast amounts of our farmland?”
He then went on to discuss how this type of transaction adds even more pressure onto small farmers in PA who are already struggling with an ever-changing landscape and an uncertain future for their industry as a whole.
Overall, it appears that John Fetterman was successful in appealing to a wide range of people across party lines with his statement about foreign governments buying US land and crops and how it affects local farmers within Pennsylvania and beyond.
This sentiment has been echoed across different sectors due to unease over China’s leverage under Biden administration policies – something which Fetterman addressed effectively with bipartisan support from all corners.
In fact, many Twitter users offered their reactions to what Fetterman said, with most of them sharing their sense of shock on agreeing with his sentiment.
Holy shit I never thought I’d agree with fetterman ????
