A man was convicted of attempted murder after shooting a state trooper and fleeing the scene when he had originally been stopped for a traffic violation. In what can only be described as sick, the man had the nerve to complain about his lenient sentence of house arrest.

When Indiana State Trooper Morgenn Evans pulled over a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup for a simple traffic violation, he had no idea it would end with a gunshot to the head. After questioning the driver, 79-year-old Oscar Kays, Officer Evans suspected that Kays was driving under the influence and issued him a field sobriety test.

When Kays showed obvious signs of intoxication, Officer Evans attempted to put him in handcuffs in order to take him in for a certified chemical test. That’s when things went terribly wrong.

Kays pulled out a .22-caliber handgun and fired at Trooper Evans, striking him in the head. Fortunately, Trooper Evans managed to return fire and briefly pursue the suspect before fleeing in his truck.

Despite being shot in the head, Trooper Evans miraculously survived with little more than a superficial wound as the bullet had merely grazed his forehead.

Kays was quickly apprehended at his home in Jeffersonville and charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, and resisting arrest. Although he faced hefty prison time for trying to murder an officer of law enforcement without showing any remorse whatsoever – he received what some may call “the deal of a lifetime”. Instead of spending years behind bars after facing such charges as attempted murder and aggravated battery on an officer – Clark County court sentenced Kays to 25 years of home incarceration instead.

Though this might seem like quite generous punishment for such heinous crimes – even that wasn’t enough to satisfy Mr. Kays who continued claiming he acted out in self defense when confronted by Officer Evans during the traffic stop.

Fortunately for everyone involved – Trooper Evan somehow managed to forgive Evan despite nearly losing his life due having been shot point blank.
