Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has explained in a recent interview that if its existence were threatened by outside forces, Russia would resort to nuclear weapons.

This past Tuesday, CNN International host Christiane Amanpour was given the opportunity to interview Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov during which he stated that Russia would only resort to the use of nuclear power during the Ukraine conflict in the face of an “existential threat.”

Peskov said:

“We have a concept of domestic security, and it’s public. You can read all the reasons for nuclear arms to be used. So if it is an existential threat for our country, then it can be used in accordance with our concept.”

The spokesman also shared:

“President Putin intends to make the world listen to and understand our concerns. We’ve been trying to convey our concerns to the world — to Europe, to the United States — for a couple of decades, but no one would listen to us.”

Only a few days following Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine did Putin make the executive decision to have his country’s nuclear forces put on high alert.

Putin had also stated that if country should choose to interfere with his attack that they  “should know that Russia’s response will be immediate and will lead you to such consequences as you have never experienced in your history.”
