Democrats are known for politicizing the unthinkable, including the death of children. Tennessee House Democrats are no different, but in this case, they may face some consequences for their actions.

Three Tennessee house democrats are facing expulsion from their elected posts after causing mass chaos at the capital by leading Trans and gun control activists through the state capital building. They used a bullhorn on the chamber floor to lead calls for more gun control.

Their actions politicized the shooting last week at the Nashville-area Covenant School. the mass shooter was a mentally ill woman who claimed to be a transgender man. She killed 6 people including 3 children ages 9 and under.

Last Thursday the three lawmakers came to the podium on the House floor between bills. They were not recognized to speak which is a violation of chamber rules. They also led protesters in the gallery in chants calling for gun control and activities claiming there were 7 victims of the mass shooting, not 6, clearly trying to make the murderer of innocent children a victim herself. Finally, they obliged fellow members’ request to stop the protest, leaving the capital in upheaval as little could be done while the bullhorn blared.

“There is a proper way to handle that and a proper way not to,” said GOP House Speaker Cameron Sexton. Sexton’s conference is leading the effort to expel the activist lawmakers.

“What was demonstrated on this House floor was not the way to do that. Almost unanimously, I think everyone in this body would agree that was not acceptable behavior, that is not how members of the General Assembly should act.”

The three liberal democrats facing expulsion are state Reps. Gloria Johnson, of Knoxville; Justin Jones, of Nashville; and Justin Pearson of Memphis.

Earlier this week, GOP lawmakers filed three resolutions to remove them from their committee assignments, consequences for behavior that is more about media coverage and less about actually changing laws for the benefit of the people they represent.
