The GOP has finally decided who will take the place of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

In a secret ballot, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-MO) defeated Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) by a mere 14 votes.

The result was a bit of a surprise because Donald Trump had endorsed Jordan for Speaker.

Let’s Vote

I will be the first to admit that I was shocked that Jordan did not take this election.

I knew it would be close, but I surely thought Jordan would be the one on top.

He took the defeat gracefully, openly telling the caucus they needed to rally behind Scalise so they could start to move forward.

There are signs that there may be problems, however, as this could be McCarthy 2.0.

Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) stated, “I don’t know if by the end of this week we will have a speaker.

“If you were to ask me a couple days ago, pre-Israel being horrifically attacked by Hamas, I would have told you that it would have been a month before we had a speaker.”

Rep. Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) added, “I think there’s some [lawmakers] that have some problems with past behavior and each other, and so I think it’s going to take more than one day to get this done.”

If the caucus can get on the same page, a vote should take place on Thursday or Friday, but I doubt the vote will be floored until Republicans know that all 222 votes will fall in favor of Scalise.

There is simply no way they are going to embarrass themselves like they did with the McCarthy vote.
