New York City’s new mayor finally done something to address the violent crimes by homeless people, only it is not going over as planned.

The number of crimes that have happened on the streets of New York due to violent homeless people is out of control.

In response, Mayor Adams has ordered the involuntary hospitalization of the mentally ill homeless.

Right or Wrong?

On Tuesday, Mayor Adams revealed the plan.

Adams stated it was a “moral obligation” to help these people.

He added that “too long, there’s been a gray area where policy, law, and accountability has not been clear.”

Adams has ordered the removal of the street of “untreated psychotic disorders who pose a risk of harm to themselves even if they are not an imminent threat to the public.”

The order has been met with a mixed response.

There are those who are happy they no longer have to worry about a walking past a homeless person in the subway that might snap and push them in front of a train.

There is also a large contingent of liberals that believe this is the wrong approach.

Councilmember Tiffany Cabán, who describes herself as a queer abolitionist, criticized Adams’ directive.

She stated, “This is deeply problematic.

“I’ve visited trained, dedicated professional mental health first responders across the US. They consistently point out a couple of truths.

“Often the wrong responder & response is what creates a deadly situation, not the mental health crisis itself.”

Housing Works, a New York City-based non-profit fighting AIDS and homelessness, also pushed back, stating, “What happens when someone refuses hospitalization? This seems like it boils down to letting the NYPD hospitalize people by force, an escalation of @NYCMayor’s sweeps.”

NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman added, “The Mayor’s attempt to police away homelessness and sweep individuals out of sight is a page from the failed Giuliani playbook.

“With no real plan for housing, services, or supports, the administration is choosing handcuffs and coercion.”
