Speaker McCarthy (R-CA) just scored some major points with the media and Democrats.
A Russian reporter tried to cherry-pick a previous comment by McCarthy in phrasing a question.
McCarthy flipped the script and dressed the man down in public.
You Scum!
McCarthy has a bit of a short fuse with reporters at times, and this was one of those times.
Prior to the 2022 elections, McCarthy had stated, “I think people are gonna be sitting in a recession and they’re not going to write a blank check to Ukraine. They just won’t do it.”
McCarthy’s point at the time was that the American people were not going to continue to allow Democrats to control Congress because they wanted some accountability for all the money that is heading to Ukraine.
At no time did he suggest cutting off aid to the country.
To that point, the Russian reporter asked him, “We know that you don’t support the current unlimited and uncontrolled supplies of weaponry and aid to Ukraine.
“So can you comment, is it possible if in the near future the US policy regarding sending weaponry to Ukraine will change?”
Clearly agitated, McCarthy responded, “Did he say I don’t support aid to Ukraine?
“No, I voted for aid for Ukraine. I support aid for Ukraine.
“I do not support what your country has done to Ukraine.
“I do not support your killing of the children either.
“And I think for one standpoint, you should pull out and I don’t think it’s right and we will continue to support because the rest of the world sees it just as it is.”
The response in the media was overwhelmingly positive, as it was with Democrats.
Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) stated, “I share the speaker’s view.
“What is happening in Ukraine is criminal. Women, children, the elderly, men are being slaughtered by a very large and very powerful country meeting a courageous people who, in my view, must win this war.
“I believe the United States of America, as it is committed to Israel’s freedom and security and sovereignty, it is committed to Ukraine as well, and I believe that will remain a consensus among Democrats and Republicans.”
I only wish I read Russian so I could see how that reporter portrayed the exchange.
