The US and its allies have come out in support of President Mohamed Bazoum after the coup attempt that happened on Wednesday.
This has created a global issue as governments all around the world are trying to figure out what this means for them.
Up until now, Niger had been experiencing unrest that culminated in this coup.
Colonel-Major Amadou Abdraman released a video accompanied with soldiers after the president’s ousting.
He declared “We have decided to put an end to the regime that you know” which contradicted Foreign Minister Hassoumi Massoudou’s statement where he called the Colonel-Major and his followers “mutinous officers to return to their ranks”.

Cameron Hudson, who is a senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, states “It’s a very fragile state and a very fluid situation right now and until we hear more from the coup plotters themselves it’s hard to know exactly what their motivations are right now.”
He further mentioned how if military personnel become increasingly focused on domestic politics instead of international terrorist groups then there could be many issues arising from this due to these groups encroaching upon Niger’s capital city.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk discussed how this could have a global impact as well.
Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) also added their opinion saying “ECOWAS condemns in the strongest terms the attempt to seize power by force and calls on the coup plotters to free the democratically-elected President of the Republic immediately and without any condition”.
The White House came out with a statement condemning this takeover stating they “strongly condemn any effort to detain or subvert the functioning of Niger’s democratically elected government.”
The US has made it clear that they stand by President Mohamed Bazoum during this time while other nations begin considering what effects this will have on them both domestically and internationally.
