Statewide Poll Shows Who May Be the Next Governor of Texas…The Results May Surprise You

Unbelievably, actor Matthew McConaughey has thrown politics in the great state of Texas on its head with a  new poll from The Dallas Morning News and UT Tyler which show the star of the Dallas Buyer’s Club favored over both anti-Second Amendment Democrat Robert Francis O’Rourke (who polled horribly in general) and even popular Republican incumbent Governor Greg Abbott.

An astonishing 49 percent of voters polled voiced support for McConaughey in a possible race against O’Rourke who polled at 27%, it would amount to a devastating 22 point defeat for the career politician from the popular moderate Texan. Even Abbott who has enjoyed near-universal GOP acclaim throughout his career would have a race on his hands polling at 35% against McConaughey’s 43%, with a 2.9% margin of error that would make for an extremely competitive 5 point contest.

According to ABC25 Texas,

“McConaughey’s lead over both candidates comes as his own candidacy for governor is still uncertain.

In a ranked preference between all three men, Abbott leads with 37 percent of registered voters.

McConaughey takes 27 percent of the vote, while O’Rourke is a close third with 26 percent.”

Not The Result Texas Expected

In spite of the rosy implications of the polling, McConaughey announced seven days later that he doesn’t intend to run at this time. In a video posted to Twitter, the actor explained,

“As a simple kid, born in the little town of Uvalde, Texas, it never occurred to me that I would one day be considered for political leadership. It’s a humbling and inspiring path to ponder. It is also a path that I’m choosing not to take at this moment. What am I going to do? I’m going to continue to work and invest the bounty I have by supporting entrepreneurs, businesses and foundations that I believe are leaders, establishments that I believe are creating pathways for people to succeed in life, organizations that have a mission to serve and build trust while also generating prosperity. That’s the American dream. And politicians, the good ones can help us get to where we need to go, yeah, but let’s be clear. They can’t do anything for us unless we choose to do for ourselves. To the leaders and the servants out there and the leader and servant in each one of us cheers to you. Here’s to the freedom, to be you, the freedom to be me, and to our responsibility to be us. In the meantime and all times and until next time, just keep living.”

To say that it’s atypical for someone polling so well to suddenly decline to run is putting it mildly. But while he’s closed the door to the Governor’s mansion for now, it would be foolish to count him out of future races for different political roles. Whether intended or not, the favorite son of Uvalde, TX is a part of Texas’ political calculus, for better or for worse.
