There is a very big case in the Supreme Court right now that could have a dramatic impact on the election.
South Carolina districting maps are before the court.
Once again, this is a case that will come down to race and how the court interprets the new maps submitted by the GOP.
It’s Always Race
During arguments, Justice Kagan stated, “We can show you that Black Democrats and White Democrats are not being treated the same way, that Black Democrats are being excluded for the district at a far greater proportion.
“So every regression analysis has things that you can poke holes in, but you didn’t give anything in response to that.
Justice Roberts that this case “would be breaking new ground in our voting rights jurisprudence.”
“We’ve never had a case where there’s been no direct evidence, no [alternative] map, no strangely configured districts and a very large amount of political evidence” to counter the racial gerrymander claims.
Roberts is going to be the “X” factor in this case, and that is not exactly good news for Republicans.
When Alabama was forced to add another all-black district, the ruling seemed to go against the precedent that race could not be the deciding factor in drawing congressional maps.
If Roberts sides with Dems, it is a fairly safe bet that at least one of Trump’s justices will also cross over, which would give the Dems yet another huge win in congressional maps.
With a razor-thin edge in the House now, the GOP simply cannot afford to have more seats taken away by the court.
