During his first cabinet meeting on February 26, Trump slammed the European Union’s protectionist trade bloc, pointing out that they have consistently been using tariffs and standards as tools to make it difficult for other nations to export goods to European Union nations.
Seated next to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump congratulated the European Union for getting away with taking advantage of the U.S. for so long — noting that he would be putting a stop to this unbalanced trade position as soon as possible. The president expressed his support for countering the European Union’s actions by implementing reciprocal mirror-image tariffs against the bloc.
“They’ve really taken advantage of us in a different way,” Trump said. “They don’t accept our cars, they don’t accept, essentially, our farm products. They use all sorts of reasons why not. And we accept everything of them.”
“We have about a $300 billion deficit with the European Union,” he added. “Now I love the countries of Europe, I guess I’m from there at some point a long time ago… but I love the countries of Europe. I love all countries, all different. The European Union, it was formed to screw to United States. Let’s be honest… that’s the purpose of it. And they’ve done a good job, but now I’m President.”
Trump was then asked by a reporter what would happen if the European Union retaliates, to which he responded: “They can’t. I mean, they can try, but they can’t.”

While the European Union was formed for a myriad of reasons, there is no doubt that the effort to oppose the power and influence of the U.S. was one of those reasons. In fact, numerous European Union officials have openly admitted this.
In 2018, the French Finance Minister openly declared that the European Union was designed to be an “empire” to compete with the U.S. — asserting that the bloc needed to “tell the U.S. clearly: we are a sovereign continent,” rather than a group of sovereign nations.
Another highly influential Eurocrat, Guy Verhofstadt, made a similar declaration in the past. “The world is developing into one not of nation states, but of empires. China is an empire. India is an empire. The US is an empire. We need to create a European Union that is capable of defending our interests,” he said.
