Former President Donald Trump has come out in support of an amendment on the Florida ballot that would legalize recreational marijuana in the state.
In November, Florida residents will decide whether the state will legalize recreational marijuana. If Amendment 3 is approved by a majority of voters, marijuana will be legalized for recreational purposes for those who are 21 years old or older. Medical marijuana was already legalized in November 2016 with Amendment 2.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his support for Amendment 3, explaining that he supports a states’ rights approach to the issue.
“As I have previously stated, I believe it is time to end needless arrests and incarcerations of adults for small amounts of marijuana for personal use,” he wrote in the post. “We must also implement smart regulations, while providing access for adults, to safe, tested product.”
“As a Floridian, I will be voting YES on Amendment 3 this November,” Trump added. “As President, we will continue to focus on research to unlock the medical uses of marijuana to a Schedule 3 drug, and work with Congress to pass common sense laws, including safe banking for state authorized companies, and supporting states rights to pass marijuana laws, like in Florida, that work so well for their citizens.”

If voters approve Amendment 3 in November, Florida will become the 25th state to legalize recreational marijuana. Currently, Pew Research reports that 24 states have legalized recreational marijuana and 38 states have legalized medical marijuana.
Trump has also previously discussed the possibility of a change in federal policy surrounding marijuana, telling reporters in a press conference last month that legalization in numerous states across the U.S. has led him to change his mind about the subject. He also expressed concern about the continued incarceration of marijuana offenders.
“As we legalize it, I start to agree a lot more because, you know, it’s being legalized all over the country,” he said, later adding: “As we legalize it throughout the country—whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing—it’s awfully hard to have people all over the jails that are in jail right now for something that’s legal. So, I think obviously there’s a lot of sentiment to doing that.”

Some conservatives are praising Trump for his position on legalization, with many pointing out that it is clearly a winning issue for Americans and could lead to increased support for Trump from young Americans in the upcoming November election.
