President Donald Trump slammed Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) to her face at an event, calling her out for violating the law and refusing to protect girls’ sports. In the altercation, Trump confirmed that he will be withholding federal funding from Maine after the state refused to comply with his executive order protecting girls’ sports and allowed a boy to take first place in girls’ pole vaulting at Maine’s Class B state championship.
Trump sparred with the Democrat governor over the issue during the Governors Working Session on February 21. The argument began when the president was discussing the NCAA complying with his “Keeping Men Out Of Women’s Sports” executive order.
He then asked the crowd: “Is Maine here? The governor of Maine? Are you not going to comply with it?”
“I’ll comply with state and federal law,” Mills responded.
“We are the federal law,’ Trump fired back. “You better do it. Because you’re not going to get any federal funding at all if you don’t. And by the way, your population, even though it is somewhat liberal although I did very well there. Your population doesn’t want men playing in women’s sports. You better comply because otherwise you’re not getting any federal funding.”
“We’ll see you in court,” Mills replied.
“Good, I’ll see you in court,” Trump warned. “I look forward to that, that should be a real easy one. And enjoy your life after governor, because I don’t think you’ll be in elected politics.”

Maine’s Department of Education announced in January that it would be refusing to comply with the executive order. In February, the Maine Principals’ Association declared that males would continue to be allowed in female sports.
The issue came to the forefront when Maine state Rep. Laurel Libby (R) highlighted it in a series of posts on X, pointing out that a teenage boy who had taken fifth place in boys’ pole vaulting just one year ago has now won first place in girls’ pole vaulting.
Two years ago, John placed FIFTH in boys’ pole vaulting.

In a statement to The Daily Wire, Libby requested that Trump intervene to protect female athletes in Maine. “The decision by the Maine Principals’ Association to continue allowing male athletes to compete against female athletes in school athletic competitions is outrageous,” the Republican lawmaker said. “Not only does their decision violate President Trump’s February 5 Executive Order but it jeopardizes the safety and privacy of female athletes, all while allowing male athletes to take medals, trophies, and podium spots away from women, effectively erasing them.”
“I urge the Trump Administration to move swiftly to ensure that female athletes in Maine can once again compete on a level playing field, preserving the integrity of women’s sports,” Libby added.
Trump swiftly responded to the news while speaking with reporters on February 20, confirming that he would be withholding federal funds from Maine over the issue.
“I heard men are still playing in Maine,” Trump said on Thursday. “We’re not gonna give any federal money. They are still saying, ‘We want men to play in women’s sports.’ And I cannot believe they’re doing that.”
“We’re not gonna give them any federal funding — none whatsoever, until they clean that up,” Trump emphasized.
