Two Virginia activist groups are standing up and leading a recall effort to get rid of George Soros-backed Loudoun County Commonwealth Attorney Buta Biberaj, who they claim has “neglected her duties” and “demonstrated incompetence.”
The groups — Virginians for Safe Communities and Stand up Virginia — have been collecting signatures, including at a Loudoun forum hosted by Patriot Pub Alliance. The event featured speakers from the two organizations, along with former GOP state Sen. Dick Black, and Scott Smith, the father of a rape victim at Stone Bridge High School.
“There have been significant recent developments so we revised our petition,” Sean Kennedy, president and founder of Virginians for Safe Communities, told The Daily Wire. “From failing to properly prosecute sex assault to allowing a domestic abuse murder to occur, there are many other problems. We have energetic volunteers. We now have momentum. We’re launching this because we’re combining forces and reinvigorating it.”
Biberaj, who was elected in 2019 after being given $850,000 from a George Soros-funded political action committee, has been roundly criticized for her lack of leadership as Loudoun County’s top prosecutor. Most notably, she sought to jail Scott Smith after he was arrested at a school board meeting for disorderly conduct on the heels of the superintendent lying about his daughter’s rape, claiming “that he had no knowledge or record of a sexual assault in a district school bathroom,” the Daily Wire reported. The prosecutor ran on criminal justice reform.
The recall document cites numerous concerns with how Biberaj has operated in as the county’s attorney. It attacks her for hiring a convicted child sex offender in March of 2021 and providing the pedophile with “access to sensitive juvenile and sexual abuse victim files without conducting an appropriate background investigation.”
The petition also mentions Biberaj’s failure to prosecute defendants in “numerous domestic and sexual assault cases.” As The Daily Wire reported in January, the Loudoun County rapist was removed from the sex offender registry — with Biberaj previously saying he was released from jail because he had no “history” of assault.
Biberaj is also a member of a group called Virginia Progressive Prosecutors for Justice, which has sought to pass laws that would end cash bail, minimum sentences, expunge criminal records, as well as address “mass incarceration.”
Months after she called for these policies, Biberaj was criticized after a man awaiting trial for assaulting his wife allegedly ignored a protective order and killed her with a hammer, according to reporting from the Loudoun Times-Mirror.
Stand up Virginia launched a movement to recall Biberaj last year. One of the major reasons was due to her participation in a Facebook group called “Anti–Racist Parents of Loudoun County,” which compiled a list of parents disagreeing with the schools and sought to “expose these people publicly.”
The Virginia activist groups’ recall will need 11,500 signatures to proceed. The petition can be viewed here.
