Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich just dropped a bit of a radical idea for Republicans.
Gingrich, prior to the Speaker’s vacate vote in the House, suggested that if McCarthy survives the vote, he remove Rep. Gaetz (R-FL) from all of his committee assignments and voting privileges.
It sounds more like something a Democrat would recommend.
Silence Him
Gingrich stated, “The effort to expel Matt Gaetz for being a destructive, irresponsible anti-Republican may be a step too far.
“Expulsion from the House requires a two-thirds vote.
“However, expelling him from the House Republican Conference and eliminating all his committee assignments and all resources other than those an individual member is entitled to would be a rational response to his suicidal efforts to cripple the House GOP.”
That is just an absurd idea.
We can discuss whether this was the right time for Gaetz to do this or even what he should have done, but the important thing to remember here is that Gaetz only did what he was able to do via the rules of the House.
People may not like it, but he was well within his rights to do this.
This cannot be compared to Bowman pulling a fire alarm, Schiff lying in the media, or Omar making anti-American comments.
Gaetz followed the rules to the letter, and McCarthy was ousted.
If Gingrich wanted to remove all of Gaetz’s privileges in the House, would he not have to do the same to the other seven GOP House members who voted with Gaetz to have McCarthy removed?
Again, you may not like it, but Gaetz only did what the rules allowed him to do, nothing more.
