Yet another Biden official is set to leave the president in the dust. One of Joe Biden’s top advisers resigned last week, according to reports the reason behind the resignation is due to his preparations to run for a vacant congressional seat in Rhode Island.

The Washington Post reported that Special Assistant to Biden and deputy director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, Gabe Amo, resigned from his position to run for Congress. His decision to leave the administration follows the retirement of Rhode Island Democratic Rep. David Cicilline.
During the time Amo has worked with the Biden administration, his focus has been on working with local leaders on legislative initiatives. He has also been a top advisor for the President in dealing with domestic issues like mass shootings.

“He was the heart and soul of our operation who approached every task, big or small, with the attitude of, ‘Give me a shovel and show me where to dig,’” said Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the White House director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.
“His commitment to public service and the President is second to none,” Rodriguez continued.
Amo will join several other Democratic contenders in the special election primary to take over Rode Island’s First Congressional District.
Other likely Democratic frontrunners for the vacated seat are Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos, Providence City Councilman John Goncalves, and former state Rep. Aaron Regunberg. It is being reported by local outlets that numerous other state legislators are expected to run for the seat as well.

Cicilline will vacate his seat in May after announcing his resignation in February to head the Rhode Island Foundation.
“For more than a decade, the people of Rhode Island entrusted me with a sacred duty to represent them in Congress, and it is a responsibility I put my heart and soul into every day to make life better for the residents and families of our state,” Cicilline told The Boston Globe.
