We have some great news from New Mexico. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has been forced to fold and remove her plan to ban legal gun owners from carrying firearms in Albuquerque and surrounding areas, thanks to both public opinion and legal decisions running against her.
Unfortunately, however, she is still trying to achieve gun-free zones through executive order.
The governor issued a ban on carrying guns in the city of Albuquerque and the surrounding Bernalillo County under what was deemed “public health orders”.
This move was widely denounced by both local and state officials who stated that they would not enforce it.
Furthermore, a court even issued a temporary restraining order against its implementation.
At a press conference where Lujan Grisham announced her decision, Republican State Senator Greg Baca was angered as he noticed that not a single Republican had been invited.
He said that it was one-sided as it left out half of the state from the discussion which he found wrong.
Baca also noted his displeasure with how during the media event she cast partisan blame when announcing her new executive order saying too many members of Congress were not offering solutions for public safety in their state yet initiatives such as denying bail to criminal suspects were not adopted in this year’s legislative session either.
He said that they need everybody involved instead of just one side being heard and ultimately focused on finding the killer of a child whose death triggered this whole ordeal rather than just blaming guns without proper evidence or reasonings behind it.
Lujan Grisham then said that police should work together to address open drug use but noted other barriers preventing them from doing so such as lack of prosecutors or treatment options for those arrested for crimes related to drugs or alcohol abuse among others things.
Despite these reasons however, she still believes that New Mexico cannot allow illicit activities like drug use to occur unchecked by authorities.
