The news of Maxie Baughan’s passing sends shockwaves through the football world.

A former standout linebacker who played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams and Washington Redskins during his NFL career, Maxie Baughan passed away on Saturday due to natural causes.

He was 85.

On behalf of the Philadelphia Eagles family, CEO Jeffrey Lurie expressed sadness upon learning of Maxie’s passing.

Eagles CEO Jeffrey Lurie posted a statement to the team’s website:

“On behalf of the Philadelphia Eagles family, I am saddened to learn of the passing of Maxie Baughan, one of our team’s all-time greats. A member of the 1960 NFL Championship team as a rookie, he went on to earn All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors during his career while playing a tough, hardnosed style of football. Maxie’s induction into the Eagles Hall of Fame in 2015 solidified his legacy and recognized his contributions to the team. Our hearts are with his wife, Dianne, and all Maxie’s family and friends as they mourn his passing.”

Baughan was a standout Georgia Tech player before being selected by both the Oakland Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of 1960 NFL Draft.

He chose to play for the Eagles instead.

During his time with them he received numerous accolades including nine-time Pro Bowler and an All-Pro selection in addition to helping them win their first ever NFL Championship in 1960.

He then played five more seasons for the Los Angeles Rams before finally joining Washington Redskins for his final season in 1974.

In 1965 he was inducted into Georgia Tech Hall Of Fame and following that he was also inducted into Eagles’ Hall Of Fame in 2015 after which he became one of 12 semifinalists for Pro Football Hall Of Fame’s Class Of 2024 last month under the senior category honoring him yet again even after retirement from professional sports life.

Current Georgia Tech coach Brent Key spoke highly about him saying “Maxie is one of most legendary figures in our program’s history and a shining example what a Tech man is.”

Our hearts go out to him family members as they mourn this huge loss.
