Newsom Signs ‘Formal Apology’ For Slavery

Despite the fact that California was never a slave state, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Thursday signed a formal apology for slavery as part of a series of “reparations” bills.

California entered the Union as a free state in 1850, but that hasn’t stopped the radical leftists in the state government from pushing for their white citizens — the majority of whom do not descend from slave owners — to pay so-called “reparations” to black citizens, the majority of whom do not descend from slaves.

The apology — which perfectly exemplifies white leftists’ obsession with self-flagellation — reads, in part: “Whereas, Well after California entered the Union and declared itself a free state outlawing slavery, more than 2,000 enslaved African people were brought to California from 1850 to 1860.”

“Whereas, the California Supreme Court enforced fugitive slave laws until 1865, stating that the antislavery law in the California Constitution was merely a ‘declaration of a principle,’” the document continued, adding: “Resolved, The State of California apologizes for perpetuating the harms African Americans faced by having imbued racial prejudice through segregation, public and private discrimination, and unequal disbursal of state and federal funding and declares that such actions shall not be repeated.”

This was just one of several bills passed by the Democrat-controlled state legislature and pushed by radical “reparations” activists. Of course, the measures did not include any actual cash payments or a reparations fund — further displaying the hilarious hypocrisy of the left, as they prefer to provide lip-service to a cause rather than actually solve whatever “problem” they pretend to be concerned about because that would put an end to their campaigning on the issue.

However, Newsom did sign a law creating a committee to study reparations, giving him something to campaign on in his next election. According to Breitbart News, after the initial committee “made recommendations that included massive cash payments and racially separate schools, legislators toned down the proposals. Newsom only included $12 million toward the reparations issue in his budget this year, which grappled with a near-$50 billion deficit.”

Meanwhile, the California Legislative Black Caucus celebrated the state’s apology and other “significant Reparations-related legislation” — expressing hope that California’s actions will inspire other states and the federal government to enact similar measures.
