Sunday Devotional: Understanding and Wisdom in a Chaotic World

By wisdom a house is built,
And by understanding it is established;
And by knowledge the rooms are filled
With all precious and pleasant riches.
Proverbs 24: 3-4

Numerous scriptures link knowledge, understanding, and wisdom together. From Psalms to Proverbs, Old Testament to New, God’s word emphasizes the need for understanding and wisdom; wisdom being the ultimate goal.

You see, it is understanding that shows us how to take knowledge and apply it correctly, producing wisdom. This means we cannot achieve our highest goal- wisdom- without understanding.

Understanding is so important that the Apostle Paul emphasizes it often in his letters. He begins his letter to the Ephesians with a prayer “that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened.” He is praying that those who read his words their eyes will be opened and minds able to comprehend the truth.

Paul even wrote in his second letter to Timothy that “the Lord will give you understanding in everything.”

We Cannot Have Wisdom Without Understanding

Wisdom comes through the process of understanding. This is why our enemy, Satan, does his best to confuse and deny the truth.

We live in a post-Christian society where truth is no longer anchored to the ultimate wisdom of God’s word. Instead, we are told there is no truth just yours and my opinions, life experiences, and feelings that dictate what the truth means to us. This is a lie.

But How Do We Fight It?

Victory is guaranteed if we turn our eyes back to the God that created this universe, and away from the idols, Satan temps us with, no matter our political affiliation or religious inclinations.

and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14

America may not be Israel. but. it. was founded on the Christian faith, by believers in the Triune God. Do you think God, who has blessed this nation because of our forefather’s faith would turn His back on the genuine repentance of His people in America? I do not believe so.

The greatest weapon we could now wield is the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, but we first must open our eyes to understand it.

Thankfully we don’t have to do this alone. God has placed within each of His children His Holy Spirit. Our guide to understanding His Word, and applying what we begin to understand in our lives.

Be warned understanding does not happen overnight, and wisdom is not reached in a day but comes over time with much trial and error. The Lord is teaching and refining us during this process so lean into the uncomfortable. Open your bible every day even if it means you can only read a verse at a time.

There are no rules or regulations on how much is enough, allow the Holy Spirit to lead you.

A Prayer for Understanding

One can never go wrong praying God’s word back to Him. God does not allow His word to return void. Below is a sample prayer, take it and make it your own. Whisper these words from your heart to your Heavenly Father before you open His word each day.

Holy Spirit, open the eyes of my heart to see the truth of your word. Help me to understand what I read, and give me eyes to see God working in the world around me. O Lord, protect me from the doubt that your enemy whispers in my ears or the temptations he places before me. Open my mind to accept the truth of Your word and engrave it upon my heart so that the words from my mouth, the thoughts in my mind, and the actions I take all flow out from what you are teaching me. In the holy and powerful name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
