Top Democrat: Americans Will Be ‘Shocked’ By Secret Service’s Failure To Protect Trump

After a closed-door meeting about the Trump assassination attempt investigation, a top Democrat told the media that the American people will be “shocked” by how egregious the Secret Service’s failures were that day.

During former President Donald Trump’s rally on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, the Secret Service repeatedly failed to protect the Republican nominee. The would-be assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was seen walking around the event with a rangefinder, had been able to fly a drone near the rally site ahead of the event, and was seen strolling across the roof in the line of sight of Secret Service snipers. The agency is facing significant criticism for all of these failures, with many arguing that the ridiculous number of failures means that it could not have been a coincidence, and was instead a deliberate effort to put Trump in danger.

The failures were so egregious that former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle was forced to resign, though critics say that this is not enough, and there needs to be serious reform and accountability within the agency.

One of the most ardent anti-Trump lawmakers in Washington, D.C., Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), admitted that the Secret Service failures that day were so egregious that the American people will be “shocked” and “appalled.”

Speaking to reporters after receiving new information about the investigation from acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe in a closed-door meeting, Blumenthal stated: “I think the American people are going to be shocked, astonished, and appalled by what we will report to them about the failures by the Secret Service in this assassination attempt on the former president.”

“But I think they also ought to be appalled and astonished by the failure of the Department of Homeland Security to be more forthcoming, to be as candid and frank as it should be to them in terms of providing information,” he added.

Blumenthal further confirmed that investigators have been pushing the Department of Homeland Security to hand over all documents related to the matter and to actually tell the public the truth.

He told the reporters that he would not be disclosing what new information he learned during the closed-door meeting, but confirmed that it would “shock the American people” about the “lapses and lags in the protection that was afforded that day and the breakdown in communication.”
