The current US federal indictment of former President Donald Trump is being widely viewed as politically motivated election interference by Joe Biden and the Department of Justice (DOJ).
As a Republican Party frontrunner for the 2024 presidential election, Mr. Trump has vowed to put an end to this injustice if he wins.
President Donald J. Trump was indicted on 37 charges related to mishandling classified documents in November 2022.
The DOJ added one more charge against him for willful retention of national defense information, along with two obstruction counts against him and his associates Carlos de Oliveira and Waltine Nauta.
These charges also allege that they attempted to delete surveillance video footage from Mar-a-Lago in summer 2022 which was confirmed by an unnamed employee who worked for Mr. Trump but did not have authorization or know how to do it himself.
Joe Biden’s Department of Justice has been strongly criticized over this move, as many claim it is nothing more than election interference as Donald Trump is likely to be the Republican party candidate for president in 2024.
In response, a statement released by the DOJ said: “Today, a superseding indictment was returned by a grand jury in the Southern District of Florida that adds one defendant and four charges to the prior indictment filed against Donald J. Trump.”
This statement further fuels claims that this case has been entirely politicized, especially when other high profile politicians including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been accused of similar crimes yet faced no such legal consequences.
A poll conducted by Harvard showed that 55 percent of registered voters believed this indictment was purely political while 56 percent thought it constituted interference from the DOJ in upcoming elections.
A spokesperson from his campaign even called out what he deemed “the Biden Crime Family and their Department of Justice to harass President Trump and those around him” before adding “Deranged Jack Smith knows that they have no case”.
It appears then that Smith will be fired should Mr. Trump become victorious next year as promised thus far.
