In his Second Inaugural Address, President Donald J. Trump slammed the response to the Los Angeles wildfires, pointing out that the government is incapable of responding to emergencies.
During the speech at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on January 20, Trump highlighted the fact that the government is failing to deal with natural disasters — pointing to the botched response to hurricanes last year and the failed response to the Los Angeles wildfires, especially the Palisades wildfire.
“Our country can no longer deliver basic services in times of emergency, as recently shown by the wonderful people of North Carolina, who’ve been treated so badly,” he explained. “And other states who are still suffering from a hurricane that took place many months ago. Or more recently, Los Angeles, where we are watching fires still tragically burn from weeks ago without even a token of defense. They’re raging through the houses and communities, even affecting some of the wealthiest and most powerful individuals in our country, some of whom are sitting here right now. They don’t have a home any longer. That’s interesting.”
Trump went on to note that the United States “can’t let this happen” and asserted that his administration would work to fix the problem.
“Everyone is unable to do anything about it,” he added. “That’s going to change. We have a public health system that does not deliver in times of disaster, yet more money is spent on it than any country anywhere in the world. And we have an education system that teaches our children to be ashamed of themselves, in many cases to hate our country despite the love that we try so desperately to provide to them. All of this will change starting today and will change very quickly.”

Trump has already vowed to visit the Pacific Palisades on Friday as part of his first trip as the 47th President of the United States. This visit comes after Trump and other conservatives have repeatedly criticized the response to the wildfires, pointing out that California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D), and other California officials have severely botched the response to the fires and seriously mismanaged fire prevention procedures.
