Two Dead, After House Suddenly Explodes

On Tuesday morning, a house on a suburban residential street suddenly exploded, leaving two people dead and one hospitalized.

Bethel-Tate Fire Chief Christopher Cooper confirmed that crews had been dispatched to a home on Joy Vic Drive in Tate Township, Ohio, at approximately 8:44 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Upon arriving, firefighters saw that the home had gone up in flames — with Cooper confirming that the explosion had been strong enough to send debris throughout the neighborhood, causing minor damage to nearby homes.

Local news station WCPO confirmed that the home was still actively burning and severely damaged when their news crew arrived at the scene.

Shocking footage of the explosion from several nearby doorbell cameras was shared on social media:

Two people were killed in the explosion and a third person was transported to a nearby hospital with burns, though there has been no update on the person’s condition as of Wednesday evening. The deceased individuals have only been identified as a man and a woman, with some reports presuming that the deceased are the couple that lived in the house — who were described by neighbor Derrick Gullett as sweet, lovely people who own several cats.

Gullet spoke to the media about the shocking incident, stating: “Roughly 9 o’clock, I was sleeping, got woke by a huge explosion. Fell out of bed, come outside, seen a gentleman running from the residence that was currently working inside the residence. It’s shocking. His hair was still on fire when he was out.”

He went on to state that the man had informed him that he was working on the home’s furnace when “all of a sudden it popped and exploded.”

Cooper has confirmed that around 20 to 30 cats were found dead at the scene as well. The fire chief noted that they transported around 15 cats to local veterinarians, but only three or four have survived. A dead dog was also found at the scene.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating the explosion.

The fire briefly started back up again at around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, with the fire department confirming that a toolbox with papers inside had smoldered overnight. A fire extinguisher and water from a firetruck were used to put out the flames.
