A top official in Milwaukee has been terminated over an election stunt gone bad.
The official reportedly was trying to prove a point about how easy it was to request absentee ballots with fake information.
The official sent the ballots to a state official, then was promptly terminated.
Stunt Gone Wrong
Milwaukee Election Commission’s Deputy Director Kimberly Zapata has been terminated by Mayor Cavalier Johnson.
Zapata had sent multiple military absentee ballots to GOP state Rep. Janel Brandtjen’s home.
In a separate interview, the representative stated that she did not order the ballots, but added, “I believe someone was trying to point out how easy it is to get military ballots.”
Mayor Johnson responded, “does not matter that this might have been an effort to expose a vulnerability” and noted he will not “accept” or “defend any misrepresentation by a city official involved in elections.”
He further stated, “It does not matter that this alleged crime did not take place at work. It does not matter that City of Milwaukee ballots were not part of this.
“Nor does it matter that there was no attempt to vote illegally or tamper with election results.”
Johnson said he and Milwaukee’s Election Commission executive director will “make certain Milwaukee’s election administration is conducted with the very highest level of accuracy and honesty — without any hints of impropriety.”
Zapata owned up to her actions and it is believed that she was acting alone.
