This weekend, the big CPAC event took place.
Normally, this is a pretty diverse crowd but it gives a good idea of who will emerge out of the pack as the GOP nominee.
This year, some key players were absent, which meant it was more like a Trump rally than a conservative convention.
Trump Wins
To that point, when the straw poll results were announced, Trump won an amazing 62 percent.
DeSantis came in second, getting only 20 percent of the vote.
Trump supporters immediately coroneted Trump as the GOP nominee, but they neglected to admit that the convention had week attendance and the room was not full for Trump.
And with DeSantis skipping the event, many of his supporters did the same, so this was far from a true measuring stick of the GOP.
I don’t want to take away from the win for Trump because it was impressive, but let’s not pretend he bests DeSantis by 3:1 because that is simply not true.
Anyone trying to sell you that bill of goods is just a liar.
I would even go further and say avoid falling into the trap of looking at national polling and start to concentrate on state-by-state polling.
In a presidential primary and general election, national polls are not worth the paper they are printed on.
This election is about winning states, period, and DeSantis is more than holding his own on that front.
