Elderly Florida Woman Killed by Massive Alligator

In Florida, an elderly woman was killed in an alligator attack as she was walking her dog.

The state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission stated that the attack occurred just after noon on February 20. 85-year-old Gloria Serge was walking her small dog nearby a community retention pond at Spanish Lakes Fairways, which is known as a 55-plus community in the city of Fort Pierce.

A 10-foot alligator emerged from the retention pond and knocked over Serge before pulling her into the water by her foot.

According to residents, the woman was trying to fight off the alligator after it had grabbed her dog.

Nearby witnesses contacted emergency services, who were able to recover Serge meanwhile alligator trapper Robert Lilly captured and euthanized the alligator.

News outlets reported that the alligator weighed between 600 to 700 pounds.

Lilly spoke with news outlets about the alligator trapping:

“It was definitely a fight. [We] snagged him on the bottom. He never surfaced. He stayed down the whole time. We were able to get a second hook in him and a hard line in him so we could get him up.”

Serge’s dog survived the incident, although it is unknown what the condition of the animal is at this time.

Spanish Lakes Fairways officials denied to comment on the incident.

Despite there being over 1.3 million alligators in Florida, attacks that result in serious injuries tend to be very rare, according to the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Residents are urged to not feed alligators and keep their distance from the animal, adding that pets should be kept on leashes far away from large bodies of water.
