Mayorkas: Saving Children From Traffickers Not DHS ‘Responsibility’

On Sunday, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told the media that protecting illegal alien children from traffickers is “outside the responsibility” of the DHS.

Mayorkas’ comments on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” came amid reports that the DHS lost roughly 500,000 illegal alien children after effectively trafficking them to unvetted “sponsors.”

The disgraced DHS secretary was asked by CBS News anchor Margaret Brennan whether it was true that illegal alien children coming into the United States were being trafficked and exploited — highlighting the fact that the Biden-Harris administration has lost track of around 500,000 illegal alien children that were sent to supposed “sponsors.”

In response, Mayorkas shockingly confirmed that the DHS had “certainly” received “reports of children being trafficked, even those as to whom we know where they are” — but apparently, that’s not his problem.

“That is outside the responsibility of the Department of Homeland Security,” he claimed. “What we do is we turn children over within 72 hours as the law requires to the Department of Health and Human services, and then HHS places those children.”

Mayorkas went on to claim that “of course, we investigate cases of trafficking, but there are children who are reunited with a parent here in the United States or a legal guardian and they move and sometimes the government loses track, individuals do not comply with the reporting obligations or otherwise. I think it is inaccurate to say that all of them are being trafficked or victimized.”

He then claimed that losing track of a child is “not necessarily specific to this administration” and argued that this “has been a longstanding challenge in the immigration system.” Of course, that shouldn’t mean that Mayorkas’ DHS should just stand by and do nothing.

Mayorkas’ shocking comments came soon after President-elect Donald Trump’s landslide victory, which was largely brought about by his strong stance on illegal immigration. The problem under the Biden-Harris administration has gotten so bad that even some Democrats, like New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D), have stated that they plan to work with Trump and his incoming border czar, Tom Homan, to enact mass deportations.
