On October 17, Melanie Yates was fatally hit by a stray bullet. She was in her home reading the Bible to her two small children before bed. The next morning the young mother was declared dead at the hospital. She was twenty-three years old.

Zion Illinois, where the shooting took place, is a small lakeside community north of Chicago and a twenty-minute ride south of Kenosha, Wisconson. It is no surprise, with the crime rate in both cities climbing by the day, that such violence would leak out to the quiet suburbs around them.
A Young Mother Murdered And a Man at Large
An arrest warrant has been issued for Zechariah C. Miles of Zion. Miles, a 16-year-old is accused of firing the shots that killed the young mother while she read her bible to her children.
On the evening of Oct 17th police were dispatched to the 2800 block of Enoch street after a 911 call indicated shots had been fired.

Miles, according to police, allegedly exited his home and recklessly began firing his rifle at another individual. Melanie Yates was hit by a stray bullet but police believe she was not the intended target.
Yates was rushed to the hospital only to die later from her wounds.
The police are charging 16-year-old Miles as an adult.

Since the warrant was issued police have been actively trying to apprehend Miles, but believe He is avoiding capture.
Zechariah C. Miles is described as being 5’5 and 130 pounds. Police warn that if you see him do not try to apprehend him, call 911.
