There is one less candidate in the race to become the next president of Ecuador today.
Right-wing candidate Fernando Villavicencio has been assassinated.
He was leaving a rally at a college stadium when the assassination took place.

The assassin managed to shoot Villavicencio three times in the head, killing him instantly.
Villavicencio was both a journalist and activist, and he was clearly on the radar of the current administration.
He had openly objected to the nation’s state-owned oil company and was leading resistance in the National Assembly, which was dissolved by the current president.
With Villavicencio in the race, there was a sense of optimism seeping into the country, but that will surely now be quashed with his death.
