After disgraced Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, his opponent has a fiery response to the decision: pointing out that it is a desperate attempt by the Liberal Party to put in a new candidate at a time when Trudeau was losing badly in the polls.
Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday morning, telling reporters: “This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I am having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.”

Canada’s Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre responded to Trudeau’s resignation in a post on X, where he deemed the radical leftist’s tenure as prime minister to be a “dark chapter in our history.” He also warned Canadians not to be quick to celebrate Trudeau’s resignation because it was just a smokescreen to save the Liberal Party.
“Canadians desperate to turn the page on this dark chapter in our history might be relieved today that Justin Trudeau is finally leaving,” Poilievre said. “But what has really changed? Every Liberal MP in power today and every potential liberal leadership contender fighting for the top job helped Justin Trudeau break the country over the last nine years.”
“All liberal politicians actively worked to pass into law the job-killing inflationary carbon tax, a tax that Carbon Tax Carney endorsed in his book,” he added. “All supported a law quadrupling the tax over the next five years, all voted for or actively supported Trudeau’s out-of-control spending, debt, and immigration.”
Poilievre went on to highlight some of the failures of Trudeau’s administration, as he has effectively presided over the steep decline of Canada in the almost-decade he has spent in office — noting that the radical leftist prime minister’s policies have caused violent crime to skyrocket by 50%, along with a staggering 116% increase in gun crime and a 250% increase in so-called “hate crimes.”
He then pointed out that the Liberal Party had only dumped Trudeau because it would have been impossible for them to stay in power if he stayed in the race with the election coming up.
“They want to protect their pensions and paycheck by sweeping their hated leader under the rug months before an election to trick you and then do it all over again,” Poilievre said. “Now, while leaderless liberals focus on saving their jobs and fighting each other for power, the country spirals out of control. An out-of-control housing emergency, an out-of-control migrant crisis, an out-of-control $62 billion deficit — not to mention tariff threats from the United States.”
He also touted his own party’s plan, noting that a conservative victory would mean that the government will “cap spending, axe taxes, reward work, build homes, uphold family, stop crime, secure borders, rearm our forces, restore our freedom and put Canada first all with one mission — to bring home Canada’s promise that every hard-working Canadian gets a powerful paycheck and pension that buys affordable food and homes on safe streets where all are united for the country we know and love.”
