President-elect Donald Trump has revealed that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to stop illegal immigration and curb human trafficking following his tariff threats.
Earlier this week, Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on both Mexico and Canada unless they help the United States curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
In a statement, Trump explained: “As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before. On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders.”
“This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” Trump added. “Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!”

Sheinbaum initially tried to talk tough in response to Trump’s tariff threat, claiming that the border crisis wasn’t Mexico’s problem.
“Maybe President Trump doesn’t know this, but of those arriving at the border – which is significantly fewer, 75 percent less than in December 2023 – half of them have a CBP One appointment. In other words, they have an appointment. So, they [the US] are the ones inviting them to come to the United States,” the Mexican president said.
However, on Wednesday night, Trump announced that he had spoken to Sheinbaum about the border crisis and the Mexican government had agreed to help deal with the problem.
“Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo,” Trump explained in a social media post. “She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border. We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs. It was a very productive conversation!”

Trump also addressed the fentanyl crisis, revealing that he would be “working on a large scale United States Advertising Campaign, explaining how bad Fentanyl is for people to use – Millions of lives being so needlessly destroyed. By the time the Campaign is over, everyone will know how really bad the horror of this Drug is.”
