As noted by Trump in his post, “The Great Lou Dobbs” was a “truly incredible Journalist, Reporter, and Talent.” Dobbs began his media career as a police and fire reporter for KBLU, a local news station in Yuma, Arizona. He later worked as a TV anchor and reporter in Phoenix, Arizona, before taking a position at Seattle’s KING-TV.
Dobbs got his big break into national media in 1979 when he was contacted by a recruiter for Ted Turner, who was in the process of creating CNN. When the network launched in 1980, Dobbs became CNN’s chief economics correspondent and host of Moneyline, a business news program that was renamed Lou Dobbs Tonight in 2003. He also served as a corporate executive for CNN, a member of the network’s executive committee and as CNN’s executive vice president.
Dobbs began focusing heavily on the dangerous ramifications of illegal immigration while at CNN, and became a self-described populist. He was later pushed out by the network in 2009 after questioning former President Barack Obama’s birth certificate and after backlash for daring to appear at a border security conference organized by the Federation for American Immigration Reform.
From there, Dobbs hosted various radio shows until he was ultimately hired by Fox Business Network in November 2010, beginning his iconic “Lou Dobbs Tonight” show in March 2011. After a decade of hosting the popular show and obtaining a massive base of supporters among conservative populists, the beloved host was pushed out of Fox News for questioning the results of the 2020 election after voting machine company Smartmatic sued Fox News for comments made by Dobbs and other anchors about the security of their machines.
Dobbs’ pro-Trump messages made him a favorite of the former president and his supporters, who regularly tuned in to his iHeartRadio show up until the beloved anchor’s passing on July 18, 2024.
“The Great Lou Dobbs has just passed away — A friend, and truly incredible Journalist, Reporter, and Talent,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “He understood the World, and what was ‘happening,’ better than others. Lou was unique in so many ways, and loved our Country. Our warmest condolences to his wonderful wife, Debi, and family. He will be greatly missed!”
