China’s military force, the People’s Liberation Army, has just begun combat exercises in the water and air surrounding the country of Taiwan on January 8.
According to China, the purpose behind the drills was “countering collusion between external forces and TW (Taiwan) secessionists.”

This sudden incident comes only days after National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated in an interview with NPR that it would take “hard work” to prevent military conflict with the Chinese government over Taiwan.
According to the one-China principle, the self-governing country of Taiwan is part of the greater China.

China has begun to fuel the flames after former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, launching 11 missiles and deploying 68 planes.
Both in May and September 2022, Biden assured that while the US would respect China’s policy of sovereignty over Taiwan, they would come to the aid of the Taiwanese military if China invades.
