Breaking News: Shots Fired, Pentagon on Lockdown

The Pentagon was on lockdown after a shooting took place just steps away from the building, near a platform by the facility’s Metro station.

Shots Fired

Intercoms within the Pentagon sounded a warning soon after the shooting, requesting that individuals inside the building remain indoors “due to police activity outside.”

The Pentagon has not released any details about the shooting, though an Associated Press (AP) reporter who happened to be near the building reported hearing multiple gunshots.

Another AP reporter in the area also reported hearing police yelling “shooter!”

“The Pentagon currently is on lock down due to an incident at the Pentagon Transit Center. We are asking the public to please avoid the area. More information will be forthcoming,” the official Twitter account for the Pentagon Force Protection Agency tweeted.

“The scene of the incident is secure. It is still an active crime scene. We request that everyone stay away from the Metro rail entrance and bus platform area. Transportation at the Pentagon is diverted to Pentagon City,” the agency wrote in a later tweet.

Sherri Ly, the Media Relations Manager at the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, told NBC News that Metrobuses were being diverted from the transit hub, and trains are bypassing the Pentagon Station “due to an active police investigation on the Pentagon Reservation.”

Two people familiar with the shooting who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that there was at least one person down, though their condition is not known.

“Units responding to a reported active violence incident in the area of the pentagon metro,” Arlington Fire & EMS reported in a post on Twitter.

Arlington Fire & EMS later posted an update, which read: “Scene is still active, ACFD did encounter multiple patients. NFI on patient status will be provided.”

The lockdown has since been lifted, though the area is still an active crime scene.

“The Pentagon has lifted the lock down and has reopened. Corridor 2 and the Metro entrance remains closed. Corridor 3 is open for pedestrian traffic,” the Pentagon Force Protection Agency said in an update.
