It appears yet another Republican politician has decided to call it quits on his career. On Tuesday, November 21, Congressman Bill Johnson (R-OH) announced that he would be planning to retire and not seeking an eighth term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Instead, he plans to embrace a new leadership role at Youngstown State University. The decision marks the end of his tenure in Congress, which began when he was elected in 2010.
The Republican Party will surely feel the impact of this loss and must now find a suitable successor for Johnson’s influential role in politics.
During his time in office, Congressman Johnson has been a prominent figure within the GOP. He had made contributions to policy areas such as energy, tax reform, and public safety; notably advocating for traditional energy sources like coal and natural gas.
He has aligned himself with mainstream positions on most issues and has been apart of efforts to shape national policy, particularly concerning veterans’ affairs and other matters related to energy production.
And Bill Johnson is out.
He says he will "continue serving in the House for several more months." He says he won't run again, but doesn't say whether he'll leave during the term https://t.co/aBgMGQ2vWj

There is no doubt that he had established himself as an effective leader amongst fellow Republicans over his fifteen years in office.
Though Congressman Johnson will be leaving us soon, we must remember all that he achieved during his time in Congress as we move forward without him. His departure will be seen as a significant moment for the Republican party due to his influential role and need to identify a suitable successor for his now vacant seat in Washington D.C.
As well as this important task lies ahead for our party, it is also important that we take time to reflect on all that was accomplished by one man who put conservative values first throughout his career: Bill Johnson (R-OH).
Despite not seeking reelection, Johnson vowed to remain dedicated to serving his constituents until he departs from office several months from now: “My offices are open and my staff remains ready to serve you. There is still much left on my agenda to do before I depart Congress.” He also made it clear that he will continue business as usual until then- there is no sign of him backing down anytime soon.
