Illegal immigration is a serious issue in the United States, with an estimated 8.6 million people having entered the country without proper authorization. Of those who have entered illegally, nearly 1.6 million are known as “gotaways” – foreign nationals who enter unlawfully between ports of entry and do not return to Mexico or Canada. These gotaways often have criminal records and intentionally avoid being caught by law enforcement, fleeing when pursued.

Border Patrol agents estimate how many gotaways there are based on images from cameras set up by Border Patrol, ranchers, or private property owners and tracking techniques such as looking for signs like broken limbs of trees or bushes, garbage, and clothes left on the ground. This data is considered an estimate because it does not account for those who go undetected and never reported; former Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz testified before Congress that gotaway data could be underreported by 10-20% for this reason alone.

From January 2021 through July 2023, at least 8,617,819 illegal border crossers were reported – higher than the populations of over 120 countries combined – with 677,327 being known, reported gotaways during this time period according to The Center Square. In May 2021 alone there were 240,000 illegal border crossers reported including 60,327 gotaways; June saw 175,000 illegal border crossers with 50,000 being identified as gotaways; and July had 200,500 total illegal crossings with 27,000 counted as gotaways according to The Center Square’s preliminary data which excludes Office of Field Operation (OFO) data.

The fact that so many individuals are entering the U.S., many without filing asylum or other immigration-related claims shows just how serious an issue illegal immigration has become in our country today. It is crucial that steps be taken to ensure we can secure our borders while still providing a safe haven for those legitimately seeking asylum or other forms of protection from persecution or danger in their home countries.
