On Thursday, Elon Musk offered to join former President Donald Trump’s administration to work on a new Government Efficiency Commission.
During a speech on Thursday at the Economic Club of New York, Trump vowed to create a commission designed to audit and provide financial analysis of the entire federal government, which would presumably help him cut wasteful government spending and put a stop to “fraud and improper payments.”
Noting that the idea came from Elon Musk, Trump stated: “I will create a Government Efficiency Commission tasked with conducting a complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government — and making recommendations for drastic reforms.”

In response to reports about Trump’s plan, Musk offered to work on the commission for free.
“I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises. No pay, no title, no recognition is needed,” Musk wrote on X, responding to a Wall Street Journal article titled, “Trump to Adopt Elon Musk’s Proposal for Government Efficiency Commission.”

The Wall Street Journal article provided further details about the plan, stating: “The commission would conduct ‘a complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government’ and make ‘recommendations for drastic reform,’ the Republican former president plans to say in an appearance before the Economic Club of New York. The goal would be to identify ways to eliminate fraud and improper payments, according to portions of the speech viewed by The Wall Street Journal.”
“Trump and Musk have grown close as Musk’s political views have become more conservative. In a recent conversation on X, the entrepreneur suggested Trump form a commission tackling government spending as a way to address inflation,” the outlet added.
This news comes just under two months after Musk officially endorsed Trump, which came in response to the assassination attempt Trump faced on July 13.
“I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk wrote in a post on X.

Soon after the assassination attempt, Musk interviewed Trump in a lengthy X Space discussion, where the tech billionaire noted that he “would be happy to help” in Trump’s second term.
“I think it would be great to just have a government efficiency commission that takes a look at these things and just ensures that the taxpayers’ hard-earned money is spent in a good way,” Musk said at the time. “And I’d be happy to help out on such a commission.”
“I’d love it,” Trump responded.
