Hamas Mass Shooter Situation

On Sunday a Palestinian gunman with Hamas ties has opened fire in Jerusalem’s historic Old City killing one and injuring four. The attack’s location was the entrance to the Temple Mount, a holy site for both Jews and Christians.

In a Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett conveyed his horror over the attack, expressing his support and sympathy for the victims. Prime Minister Bennett promised to direct Israeli security forces to be on high alert to prevent other such attacks from happening.

The Hamas Connection

The police have not released the gunman’s name but report that he was a 42-year-old Palestinian man who was fatally shot by police at the scene of the attack. The police found a knife on the gunman as well as the weapon used to carry out the attack.

The Islamic terrorist group Hamas has taken ownership of the attack. They have publically claimed the gunman as one of their own and called the attack a “Heroic Operation,”

Not the First Not the Last

Sunday’s attack in the Old City of Jerusalem is not the first in recent history. Last week a Palestinian teen rushed Israeli police officers with a knife. He was fatally shot after stabbing two of them.

A sizable Israeli security force around Jerusalem makes attacks like these rare but not impossible. Palestinians have carried out multiple shootings, knife attacks, and car-rammings aimed at Israeli citizens and police forces.

Jerusalem has been a hotly contested city since the time of the crusades, if not before, between Islam and the Judeo-Christian faiths. America recognizing Jerusalem as the rightful capital of the Jewish nation has only added to the fight but was the right decision as Jerusalem historically has always been the holy and capital city of the Jews.
